In fact, I don't think you can hope to get it in single player anyway. Faith is pretty expensive though, so I wouldn't count on that. The only other merc that I can think of that's useful is the Act 1 merc with a Faith bow because it grants Fanaticism aura (faster attack speed). By getting yourself an Act 2 merc with an aura, they continue to be useful forever because they improve YOU. A Defiance merc can be a great choice too, as at higher levels they increase your armor level my ridiculous sums.Īll in all, Iron Wolfs are good damage for Act 3 normal, and then they start to suck hardcore for the rest of the game. You can also get a merc with Might from Normal or Hell Nightmare that increases your physical damage by 100%+. And their damage can be upgraded by getting them better polearms.īut interestingly, Holy Freeze isn't necessarily the best. For example, Holy Freeze does pretty much everything the cold Iron Wolf does but in AoE. What are your experiences and preferences with hirelings?Īct 2 mercs are really the only way to go without some really high level gear for your companion. The absolute worst is when they suddenly decide they wanna open a door you were keeping shut.īut still, I love my mercs and they add a great dimension to the single-player experience. They don't follow as well as you'd always like, and then they get brave and start fights around the corner without you.

My only complaint is that they (all mercs) are just kinda stupid. Merc sits back and freezes guys up while I run in, draw fire away from him and start dealing poison and open wounds damage. While this works fairly well with any class, I think it clearly compliments the barbarian I'm playing right now. As a bonus, they solve the problem of resurrecting monsters - frozen and shattered = nothing to rise up! They're horrible in melee combat, but do a great job at slowing down mobs of monsters and creating impromptu choke points. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Act III magic-mercs, especially anyone wielding cold spells.

I'll explain my choice, but wanna hear everyone else's rationale. Even your own character's class comes into play. I realize that this is a very contextual thing, knowing what kind of merc works best against a certain terrain or types of enemies.
